...And is Lagria cyanea the Black Darkling Beetle or something different? Thank you for your time and expertise.

What exactly is the difference between this and Lagria cyanea? I can't seem to find any difference in the images alone

My photo doesn't show it as hairy like pics in Brisbane Insects, (http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_darklings/BlackDarklingBeetle.htm), but maybe it's just that my camera doesn't have the magnification?

Really I'm not too sure at all which is which - I trust Brisbane Insects, but Ken Walker identified my one as L. cyanea. Looking at the sightings there does seem to be a bit of a difference between my ones and yours but it's nothing obvious, so I'm not too sure and I'm assuming that the individuals just look extremely similar. There was a recent discussion on Bowerbird about the misidentification of E. grandis and the difficulties involved with identifying beetles from this group, so hopefully one of the experts will be able to come to our aid!

I see what you mean Matthew. I can't find any differences either. I identified it by looking at Brisbane Insects, where I can't find Lagria cyanea listed. Looking back through my records, I see I have a previous photo id'd as Lagria cyanea on your advice. Both Ecnolagria aurofasciata and Lagria cyanea, are listed in ALA, with photos of similar-looking beetles - and I have one photo of each listed there. I am happy to take your advice and change the id for this one. Should I flag a problem on ALA?
