Id thanks to Don Herbison-Evans, probably in the Plusiinae sub-family. Don said " larvae like this of species in Plusiinae are variable and nearly indistinguishable". So probably not a new invasion, thankfully. Cheers Brett

Marie found this caterpillar in the lettuce. We tried to raise it but it died quickly (24 hours). I thought it was a Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) so did give it much thought, but when adding it to my id'ed photo's did my usual check and it doesn't match the photo's on line. BUT google images showed what I think is a good match which is Silver Y (Autographa gamma), not recorded in Australia on atlas. The legs match as does the sparse hair, faint stripes & overall colour. Does anyone have a clue what native or other introduced species this could be? Cheers Brett
