    Physical Description

The stalk or receptacle is cylindrical, hollow and spongy, terminating in a conical-shaped cap which has a textured surface of irregularly branching ridges. The slimy spore mass (gleba) of theses fungi is attached to the outer surface of the cap. The gleba is foul-smelling, described as rotting carrion. This odour attracts insects to the gleba, whose spores stick to the insects feet and body. The spores are then spread by the insect to new locations.
