    The larvae I kept in moist soil with vegetative matter that I found them in hatched out and I have included an image of two of the siblings. Seems like Biblio imitator is correct.

    I now think this is likely to be Garden Maggot Fly (Bibio imitator). I have some kept in a container of soil hoping they will pupate and emerge as adults to confirm this.

    I found a group of these underground when digging up a geranium plant. I assume they are the larvae of a diptera. Maybe a soldier fly? I have seen garden soldier fly (Exaireta spinigera) in my garden before so maybe this one?
